There are two main types of training that pertains to operating a forklift or power-propelled truck.  The most common and basic training program is based on your previous knowledge and skill set matched with the type of powered industrial truck you need to operate on the job site or in and around the workplace.  The conditions that are assessed during your training and testing consist of the workplace hazards and how well the operator can demonstrate his or her abilities while still operating in a safe manner.

There are also “refresher” programs where you can review or upgrade your forklift operator training.  These reviews are usually performed when the operator was involved in an accident and occasionally when changes have occurred in the workplace or with the operators job title (your new position may require the operation of a different powered industrial truck).  Evaluations are performed every three years; an evaluator may instruct the operator to take some “refresher” forklift operator training.  Delaware has several classes of trucks that an operator can obtain a ticket for, and an operator may hold tickets for several classes at once.

Classes of Trucks
Class I: Electric Motor Rider Trucks:  Sit-down rider and Counter-balanced stand-up rider

Class II: Electric Motor Narrow Aisle Trucks:  Order picker, Turret Truck and Reach-type outrigger

Class III: Electric Motor Hand or Hand/Rider Trucks:  Low lift platform, Low lift walkie pallet and High lift counterbalanced

Class IV: Internal Combustion Engine Trucks (with cushion/solid tires):  Fork counterbalanced and Sit-down rider fork

Class V: Internal Combustion Engine Trucks with Pneumatic Tires:  Fork counterbalanced and Sit-down rider gas

Class VI: Electric Internal Combustion Engine Tractors:  Sit-down rider

Class VII: Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks:  Straight mast and Extended-reach

Why is Training Necessary?
Each truck has unique characteristics that allow the vehicle to carry, lift, pull, push and stack materials of various weights and sizes.  And because these trucks are power-propelled they have some inherent dangers and hazards that are associated.  This makes training a valuable part of their operation.  All forklift operators training is provided by a designated individual who has the skills and knowledge to judge your competency.  Training will be provided through lectures and videos, and demonstrations and exercises.
