Is your home flooding or collecting moisture? This is a problem that could spell disaster for your investment. Moisture in your premises can lead to structural deterioration of your property. It encourages the build up and reproduction of mould which leads to unsightly patches on the walls, pillars and roof. Water or moisture in your property causes damage to buildings such as steel structures rusting, wood rotting, plastic or laminated materials de-laminating. This leads to the value of your property deteriorating. Water moisture could be the result of rising water levels, floods, leaking underground pipes and the likes.

The Remedy
There are a number of steps you can take to remedy the situation. The three most popular methods for basement waterproofing in Brighton are using a cavity drainage membrane, tanking and waterproofing external systems. These are not the only methods of waterproofing available.

The Method
Cavity Drainage Membrane: This method involves the conversion of a basement. A sump chamber is laid down into the structural shell. A drainage membrane with spikes, closely resembling heavy duty bubble wrap is plastered over the walls and held down by fixing plugs. Channels to collect water are laid at the base of the walls to collect run off moisture and redirect it towards the sump chamber where pipe work flushes out the water to the external drainage system. The channels laid down at the base of the walls are covered with vapour tape to trap the water and channel it towards the sump chamber where it’s directed towards the pipes and external drainage system. The chamber is then covered with a sump lid.

Installing The Insulation
A layer of insulation is laid over the ground and covered with a cavity drainage membrane to keep the floor dry. Concrete is the poured onto the ground and flattened to form a slab, covering the insulation. Floor tiles are then laid over the floor of the structure. Metal or timber dry lining is fixed to the walls followed by plasterboard. When that is done, the electrical and plumbing services are installed and the conversion is complete with a moisture drainage system in place. The waterproofing membrane comes in different sizes to cater for different moisture intensities. The waterproofing method can be used alone or in conjunction with other methods to contain the moisture. The levels of moisture will determine the way this problem is tackled.
