West Virginia was the thirty-five state to join the union after many of the landowners chose to break away from the already established-10th-state of Virginia. The newly established West Virginia became a key state in the Civil War, as a border state and, also went down in history as the only state to have been formed by a secession from the Confederacy.
One of the main geographical features that the state can have totally bragging rights to is that it completely within the Appalachian Regional Commission, which no other state has. West Virginia is also noted for its flora and fauna. Some of the most beautiful Spring scenes a visitor or resident will see is flowers in Charleston, WV and many other parts of the state. The Fall colors are also amazingly stunning with just about every shade of green, through gold, yellow and brown available.
Pre-History
In 1661 King Charles II gave the ‘Northern Neck’-an area of land between the Rappahannock and Potomac rovers-to a group of men as a gift. By 1746 the area was already invaded and settled by a group of Germans and when George Washington surveyed the area, in 1748-1751 he noted the same. The British Colony of Virginia was owned by the English, but the western side of Virginia State-until the split with West Virginia-was known as Trans-Allegheny Virginia. Francis Pierpont was declared Governor of the western and northern counties when the residents set up their own separate government in 1861. In 1863, the West Virginia state was admitted into the Union and abolished slavery.
The separation of the two Virginia’s was largely due to differences that came about as a result of the Civil War. The Western side of the state wanted to secede because it did not feel the allegiance to the Confederate state and when the forty-nine delegates met to discuss term they voted on the matter. Seventeen of the newly established West Virginia delegates voted in favor, but thirty voted against, with two absentee votes. On that day, April 17th, West Virginia was declared a new State, joining the union as the thirty-fifth state in 1863. There is so much to learn and see about West Virginia, even with its short history.
