Yes, frozen rats and mice are great things to feed your snake or raptor, but they’re not so good for feeding your smaller reptiles like bearded dragons, geckos or frogs. The best things for them are reptile feeders like crickets, mealworms and superworms.

Super Food
Superworms are super reptile feeders. These tropical insects are twice the size of mealworms, meaning they’re about a half inch bigger. They’re easy to digest because of their soft exoskeleton, they’re higher in carbohydrates and fat, and if you get a batch of one to two thousand of them and transfer them to a plastic container, they will not turn into beetles. All you have to do to maintain them is put them in a container with some wheat bran or uncooked oatmeal, along with a moisture source. That moisture source can be something as simple as a slice of potato.

Crickets
So what makes crickets so appealing to most reptiles? Simply put, reptiles find the movements of crickets irresistible. Crickets are easy to care for and you can dust them with nutritional supplements like vitamins and calcium very easily right before feeding time. For these reason, crickets are the most popular feeder for reptiles, especially lizards and frogs. The only downside to crickets are their ability to escape easily, and they drown if not properly cared for.

Mealworms
If crickets are the most popular reptile feeder, mealworms are the second most popular. They range in size from, at the smaller end, a grain of rice, to the larger end of about an inch long. Mealworms are unable to climb which makes them easy to keep. If you keep them at room temperature, they will continue to grow and eventually become beetles, but if you refrigerate them, they go into a dormant state. This is the simplest way to store them. No need for providing any water or nutritional source and they last several months this way.

Choices
With so many providers and choices to make regarding the feeding of your pet, do your research and get your food from a reputable provider. Do not ever give your pet crickets or other feeders that you “catch” in your backyard. With so many pesticides present today, you can’t be too careful.
