To ensure components of an engine and the engine itself operate optimally, manufacturers and suppliers turn to additives to enhance, add to and/or even remove properties from the base oil. These range in formulation and intent. Among the most common ones employed is anti wear oil additives.

Purpose

Introducing anti-wear additives into an oil base is intended to improve lubrication capabilities. This additive may be comprised of zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) or others, phosphorus-based but without the highly regulated zinc. All are effective in ensuring the following:

  1. Reduction in the potential friction between any metal components comprising the engine
  2. Inhibiting the engine seizing up
  3. Slowing down the process of oxidation
  4. Preventing corrosion

Overall, the addition of anti wear oil additives is intended to protect against normal and accelerated wear which occurs through metal-to-metal contact of the gears of the machinery. It also guards against the loss of metal surfaces.

Anti Wear Oil Additives at Work

An anti-wear oil additive is referred to as “polar.” When included as part of a formulation, if the temperature of the engine is hot enough, a chemical reaction occurs. The anti-wear oil additive attaches itself to the metal surfaces of the machinery in the form of a film. It is this film that minimizes wear. It may also protect the engine and its components from oxidation and damage caused by corrosive substances. This protection will remain until the additive is used up. It then requires replacement to prevent damage to the mechanisms through wear.
