Zoological models can be used in a wide range of different types of classes and programs. These models are often used in life science classes, comparative anatomy courses, animal science, zoology, biology and similar training programs.

When it comes to animal anatomy models, there are several different factors to consider. The more detailed the study or the course will be, the more important it will be to choose models offering the level of detail and specificity required.

For example, general life science classes may only need a basic anatomical model for comparison purposes between different classifications of animals, insects, reptile or amphibians. Other classes, particularly those at higher levels and for post-graduate studies, will require more detailed models with full accuracy in depicting the full anatomy of the individual body part or system.

Skeletal and Anatomical Models

In many courses of study, both skeletal and animal anatomy models will be required. The skeletal models will be instrumental in studying and comparing the form and structure of the different species. The anatomical model, complete with organs, muscles, and tissue, will provide a full view of the body in relation to the skeletal system.

Life-size models are typically possible with the smaller species, while models of insects will be designed to be large than life for easy visibility. Some of the models will have movable parts, typically the major joints of the body, as well as removable aspects of the skeleton or the anatomical components.

Options to Consider

A very popular option for teaching with animal anatomy models is to have the model appear lifelike on one side, then turning the model shows a cross-section of the body with the major organs and system.

In these types of models, look for removable organs to highlight the location of the organs and how they are positioned in the body. Durability and a sturdy design in addition to quality of depiction of the animal should be important considerations when comparing different model options.
