Implements that are used every day in medical applications usually require a coating to be effective and avoid infection. Coatings can range from lubricating to antimicrobial. Medical device coating suppliers will assist manufacturers and practitioners in obtaining the proper coatings for the job.

Antimicrobial Coatings

Sanitation is of paramount importance in any medical setting. Many medical procedures are invasive by nature, and the introduction of bacteria secondary to the existing medical disorder should be avoided. Deadly staph infections are becoming more common in hospitals. Antimicrobial coatings should be used on any implements that come into contact with blood, urine, and other bodily fluids. These coatings not only sanitize the instrument but release agents that can fight deadly infections.

Lubricant Coatings

Lubricants allow devices to be inserted into bodily openings or other devices. Lubricants reduce friction that can cause a patient pain, such as during catheter insertion. These agents are regulated by the FDA and must not flake or expand when in contact with bodily fluids or water. They must also retain their lubricant properties during repeated use.

Hydrophilic Coatings

Hydrophilic coatings are sophisticated and produce a surface with increased wettability. The process of applying hydrophilic coatings yields a surface that helps bind water to the implement being used. These coatings can be permanent or temporary, depending upon the purpose of the implement. The coating process usually requires covering the instrument or apparatus with a coating agent and then drying or curing, utilizing heat or ultraviolet light.

In all cases, it is critical to find a vendor that can effectively apply these coatings, using materials that meet current standards. The best vendors conduct their own testing of products so that the purchaser does not have to test before using. When interviewing vendors, purchasers should make sure they are fully informed about that vendor’s processes, equipment, and adhesion to current applicable standards.
