Chiropractic adjusting occurs when the chiropractor physically manipulates the bones, muscles etc, particularly those in the neck and spine. The purpose of chiropractic adjusting, often called manipulation is to increase the mobility of the spine and to straighten it should it be out of position. There are a number of valid reasons why people seek chiropractic care in New York but by far the most common is to seek relief from back pains.

The spine is made up of a series of vertebrae, all in a stack; the vertebrae protect the spinal cord and support it. The vertebrae are separated by discs of cartilage. Should one of the discs somehow become misaligned the result is a spinal subluxation, it is believed that it is a subluxation that is the cause of many back pains.

When a disc does become misaligned the chiropractor adjusts it, the most common method employed is to apply a quick, very precise pressure on the affected area. The patient lies on a unique bed, in most cases on his or her stomach but the chiropractor may have the patient lying on the side or even on the back. Although quick pressure is used most often, the chiropractor may also use nothing more than his fingertips. The Chiropractor manipulates the vertebrae by applying focused pressure which is actually quite light. This type of chiropractic care in New York is called release work.

Although it is the skilled hands of the chiropractor that are most often used, tools can also be employed. The bed that is used for treatment is in itself a tool, many of these beds are equipped with portions which are designed to move, they drop away when pressure is applied by the Chiropractor; the drop reduces the force of the downward pressure.

Another device that is used when undergoing chiropractic care is a tool which looks very much like a little pogo stick. The Chiropractor places the rubber tip of the tool right on the vertebrae that is in need of adjustment. When the tool is subjected to pressure a spring release mechanism punches the rubber tip directly at the joint. The force is vey concentrated and it helps to release a still joint.

While the Chiropractor is making adjustments there are audible noises that sound like popping or cracking. These noises have nothing to do with the bones; they are caused by air bubbles that are trapped in the fluid surrounding the joint.
